What is Biogas?
Biogas is a renewable energy source produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic materials such as agricultural residues, animal manure, sewage sludge, food waste, and other organic matter through Biogas Plant / Digester. It primarily consists of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), along with small amounts of other gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), nitrogen (N2), and traces of water vapor.
The production of biogas occurs in anaerobic environments, meaning without oxygen. During anaerobic digestion, microorganisms break down the organic materials in the absence of oxygen, converting them into biogas through Hydrolysis, Acidogenesis, Acetogenesis and Methanogenesis biochemical reactions.
What are the uses of Biogas?
Biogas is typically captured and stored in gas holders, tanks, or bags for later use or utilization. It can be used directly as a fuel for cooking, heating, lighting, or powering engines and generators. Alternatively, biogas can be upgraded to biomethane through processes such as purification or removal of impurities, making it suitable for injection into natural gas pipelines or use as a transportation fuel.
